This is where I'll tell what exhibitions I went to during the year.....there a few more but i dont remember fuck all of em

I'm going to rate these exhibition in a 'Come Dine With Me' style, each one will get a mark out of 10.

Febuary 16th
went to the Crawford to see the photography exhibit ‘Altered Images’

Good enough show, some interesting pieces of work but I'd only give it a mark of 5

February 25th:
went to an exhibition in the opera house by print makers from the backwater print makers, first year print students from the Crawford and artists from CSN. The prints from the first years, with the help of Katrine, were deadly....pretty fuckin cool

I give this show a mark of 7

March 17th: the Terminal Convention

this show was sum load of dung....the amount of money that went into to was appalling.....These liverpoolians dat ran it,sum knob called paul were definutly not the Beatles of the Art world.

the building itself was cool, but the work was awful and up its own hole with no reason to be....

because of this I will give the show a mark of 2
However because there was a free bar and a load of wine and chilli I'll change the mark form 2 to 4

May 1st : Third year ccad students show 'Ground Floor'

That the show was deadly, the space was fantasic, alot of work was top notch.....Da man Rory Mullans cardboard shop was top notch, and the free drawings he gave away for free could have been sold for 100$ they were dat beautiful. I got a lighter drawing held it through the night, through 2 party den managed to lose it in college the next day, ferious death.
Rob,s security video piece was also amazing, could easilly go toe to toe with any work in the turner prize.
Also the views from the 17th floor penthouse and the rooftop garden are mint, apparently.

I give this show a mark of 8

a little look at charles bukowski, poet and writer

Alone With Everybody

the flesh covers the bone
and they put a mind
in there and
sometimes a soul,
and the women break
vases against the walls
and the men drink too
much
and nobody finds the
one
but keep
looking
crawling in and out
of beds.
flesh covers
the bone and the
flesh searches
for more than
flesh.

there's no chance
at all:
we are all trapped
by a singular
fate.

nobody ever finds
the one.

the city dumps fill
the junkyards fill
the madhouses fill
the hospitals fill
the graveyards fill

nothing else
fills.

"There's nothing to mourn about death any more than there is to mourn about the growing of a flower. What is terrible is not death but the lives people live or don't live up until their death. They don't honor their own lives, they piss on their lives. They shit them away. Dumb fuckers. They concentrate too much on fucking, movies, money, family, fucking. Their minds are full of cotton. They swallow God without thinking, they swallow country without thinking. Soon they forget how to think, they let others think for them. Their brains are stuffed with cotton. They look ugly, they talk ugly, they walk ugly. Play them the great music of the centuries and they can't hear it. Most people's deaths are a sham. There's nothing left to die."

Opening: Thursday 3 March, 6 – 8pm

Michelle Browne’s first solo show presents a series of public performance works made over the last four years. Browne has become synonymous with public event based work. Created through a series of interviews with witnesses to these events, Browne tries to determine the experiential legacy of this work. In conjunction with this, Browne has curated a group exhibition of work dealing with the challenges of documentation featuring Amanda Coogan/Simon Keogh, Trace Collective, The Performance Collective, Susanne Bosch and Ella Burke. An essay ‘On Collecting, presenting and mediating’ by Helen Carey has been commissioned to accompany the exhibition.

Isabela Basombrio Hoban at Mountmellick Library & Art Gallery, Laois

‘RANSOM ROOM’ an exhibition by Isabela Basombrio Hoban
8 – 31 March 2011

This exhibition refers to the current economic climate in Ireland and the larger question of value and meaning through the use of gold. The “gold” objects on view are a reference to the ancient use of gold in Peru (where the artist is from). The exhibition title ‘Ransom Room’ alludes to the 16th century captured Peruvian Inca leader Atahualpa who offered to fill a room with gold in return for his freedom.

Clare Hartigan at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, Offaly

‘Inner Space Exploration’
Opening: 3 March 2011, 7:30pm.

A graduate of Limerick College of Art and Design, Clare Hartigan’s work is very much influenced by her surroundings with a major focus on the importance of family, friends, community and local heritage, finding inspiration in political, cultural, or emotional happenings around her. Previous collections explored evolution as an integral part of all our existence, physical, emotional and spiritual. “Everything changes; everything is connected; we humans need to pay attention.” Other work looked at the freedom of nature in contrast to the structures of the urban jungle and the rules and regulations we impose on ourselves. As Birr is associated with outer space exploration, through the location of Lord Rosse’s telescope from the 1840s, Hartigan decided to internalize the exploration to Inner Space. A space as vast and unexplored.

The exhibition will continue throughout March and will be open Monday – Friday
1 – 5.30pm and evenings of performances.

Group Show at SOMA Contemporary, Waterford

‘Three Colours / Blue’ at SOMA Contemporary
10 March – 2 April 2011

Opening reception will be held on Thursday March 10th at 7:00 pm with music by Katie Kim.

SOMA Contemporary announces ‘Three Colours / Blue’, the first in a series of exhibitions investigating the Primary Colours and their acquired meanings. Featuring work by John Brady, Hannah Breslin, Oisin Byrne, Susan Connnolly, Rachael Corcoran, Michael Durand, Mary Kelly, Cassie Kirby, Aoife Kirwan, Ruth Lyons, Kevin Mooney and Mary-Ruth Walsh.

Blue is Calming. It can be strong and steadfast, or light and friendly. This forms the exhibition’s context, to provide an overarching setting for the works, all of which include or are produced in blue. Participating artists have been asked to express their own thoughts on blue’s fundamental values.

The aim is not merely to interact with the perceptual property on a theoretical level, but to find a more personal, creative approach which, against the exhibition’s guiding motif of the colour blue, allows the individual voice of each participating artist to emerge.

Curated by Rachael Corcoran.

Barrie Cooke at Hamilton Gallery, Sligo

New & Selected Works by Barrie Cooke
3 March – 2 April 2011

Opening: Thursday 3 March 2011, 8pm

Barrie Cooke RHA, begins his 81st year with this exhibition of personally selected works, spanning the last decade, at the Hamilton Gallery. The works on exhibition include watercolours and oil paintings from Cookes travels to New Zealand and South Africa. Selected works include two portraits of Sligo author Dermot Healy and paintings from Cill Rialaig, Lough Arrow and Knocknarea. The artist has also selected a series of lithographs for the exhibition.

In the words of Nobel Laureate and fellow Aosdana member Seamus Heaney ‘Much of his art has exhibited the fluency and first-handedness of cave art, combining the now of perception with the then of fulfilment. Whether he is painting a nude in a landscape or water-hurry in a river, whether it is an elk with horns full of galactic light or a tench-lake sluggish with lilies and twilight, there is something at once erotic and absorbed in the pursuit.’

A poet’s word strikes true, it moves the very depths of pure being. So, this body of work is about finding that voice, a voice so remote within us, that it is the voice we hear when we listen as far back as memory reaches, the very limits of memory, even beyond memory perhaps.” Reihill has exhibited regularly in Dublin over the past 15 years, and has also been involved in shows in London, New York, Venice and Melbourne.

Mark Chambers at The Engine Room Gallery, Belfast

Mark Chambers ‘Sinews of Understanding’ Solo Exhibition
4 – 26 March 2011

This body of work is about harmony and discord; the notion that everything does not adhere to its symbolism. Multiple meanings will exist, often resulting in a paradox. It deals in opposites and contradictions: black and white, shadow and light, movement and stillness, clarity and obscurity, and the interplay between different dimensions.

The work uses the human form and other symbolic metaphors, applying a variety of materials, processes and techniques through the disciplines of drawing, painting, installation and sculpture.

By removing objects from their physical context and isolating their elements, the work seeks to encourage the viewer to see things in a concentrated and intimate way; with the aim to provoke, enrich, destroy and renew sinews of understanding.

Printmaking is a means of exploring my interests, and one which I have increasingly turned to in the last 5 years. It has a long established tradition but is not confined to the past. It suits my condition and the rhythm and way I need to work.”
